Denmark · Me myself and I

Plan B

I have a problem with Edward A. Murphy Jr. and we’ve been giving each other the cold shoulder for as long as I can recall. For any two options question, I’ll inevitably choose the wrong answer. Head or tale is a lose-lose case for me every single time. The same way, if something can go bad, it will. I am not negative, and I still hope for the best, but it is just some kind of bad karma sticking to me for some reason. I must have been a very bad person in a previous life!

So when I started piling up the money to plan our first trip to Denmark, I should have known something would go terribly wrong!

And it did.

I don’t want people to pity me, but it’s part of my go-Danish-crazy story. On New Year’s Eve, I had an accident. And a few days later, I had to get surgery and found myself on a month of sick leave. All the money saved for our trip had to be spent because of the accident, and I was suddenly back to square one.

I was suffering physically, mentally and I was watching my dream of Denmark invasion drift away…

Time for plan B. But I had no plan B. Needed a plan B, really bad, and strong medicine for the pain!

I told myself, the best way to keep my mind busy while finding a way to get rich and/or get adopted by Queen Margrethe II was to learn the language! What a good idea, I told myself. But, of course, that couldn’t be an easy thing to do, eh M. Murphy?

I started an active research for a Danish teacher. And kept searching, and searching, and ended up learning by myself on Babbel’s website. I even contacted the Danish Club of Montreal, without any luck, and the Danish Consultate in Montreal, who gave me some information, but couldn’t refer me to anyone in Quebec who could help me in my quest to learn Danish. (very nice man though… I should write back soon to show him I haven’t given up!)

One of two things… Either Danes don’t want to be recognized in foreign countries and pretend to come from somewhere else (I would understand, how crazy do you have to be to leave Denmark?!? hehehe) or, there really aren’t many Danes here. That, I would understand. And I know that Canada is a country that seems to attract migrants, so if Danes didn’t migrate to Canada, I figure they just don’t leave their country! And, therefore, I decided I had my first proof that Denmark was awesome.
