In the early hours of the morning, she awakens.
The sun is shining brightly, and the neighbour has chosen today as a good day to hammer his life on the adjoining wall of their apartments. She tries to tell herself it will end soon, knowing it won’t. She wonders if the man next door is using some sort of code, like Morse, to get her attention and her help. If so, he should calm down and hammer slower, langsommer please… But the hits are constant and fast.
She awakens, But she doesn’t open her eyes just yet. Spooning the body next to hers, she moves back a little and slips a hand on the back of the sleeping dreamer. Feeling the warmth of him under the tip of her fingers, she caresses his skin up and down, brushing lightly from his lower back to his shoulders…
A thought crosses her mind… What if that skin was another’s?
Her hand takes a second go down the spine of the now stranger lying close to her. Her fingers start trembling… A weird mix of lust and mild fear starts to get to her, flowing through her bloodstream like a strong paralyzer, leaving only her hand in movement…
“Who are you?” she means to murmur, but can’t.
She feels a shiver from the skin, like an answer to her unspoken question. Now more curious than afraid, she doesn’t even notice that the hammering has stopped, as she presses her palm around the curve of the shoulder.
“Who are you?” again, she can’t keep the silent call to herself.
A chill again, slightly perceivable. Numbness takes over her body, from her toes all the way to her head, fighting the darkness. She tries to push it away, needing to know who lies there, under her shaky fingers…
“Just who are you…?
Who are you…?
She awakens, the bright sun in her eyes and the sound of a hammer playing a hardcore beat on the wall… Eyes wide open on a brand new day. Hoping the neighbour doesn’t get a drilling urge before noon.
